Congress Eyes Legislation To Harmonize EPA, NHTSA Vehicle Programs

Several House Republicans are suggesting they may need to move narrow legislation so that EPA and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) can better harmonize their overlapping vehicle greenhouse gas and fuel economy programs after administration officials said they lack the authority to respond to automakers' calls to remedy “inconsistencies.” But any legislative effort would be fraught and could open the door to broader reforms, including a repeal of the entire program that other GOP lawmakers are seeking.
