Litigation: EPA, DOJ float settlement with Hyundai over illegal engines

EPA and the Justice Department (DOJ) are announcing a $47 million Clean Air Act legal settlement with vehicle manufacturer Hyundai over claims that it “stockpiled” thousands of engines with outdated emissions controls and later sold them in heavy construction equipment. According to a Sept. 19 summary of the deal, Hyundai Construction Equipment Americas and Hyundai Heavy Industries introduced “at least” 2,269 illegal diesel nonroad vehicles into commerce, after pre-purchasing engines with outdated emissions controls between 2012 and 2015.
